What are polyphonic ringtones?

Polyphonic ringtones arrived after Monophonic Ringtones and had 4 voices and up. What this means is the its polyphony (amount of voices it could play at once) was 4. These days they are probably running at up to 128 voices depending on the cell model you have.

Generally MIDI format formed the basis of polyphonic ringtones, allthough most manufacturers decided to lock in their markets and create their own formats, which brought about formats like MMF, ADP, XMF, SP-Midi and more.
