Monophonic Ringtones

What are monoponic ringtones?

Monophonic Ringtones are the original ringtones that were found on mobile telephones. With a 'polyphany' of only 1 note (only able to play one note at once), you can imagine that the scope that we got to create ringtones were not that great.

Ways in which we can make a monophonic ringtone sound like it plays multiple tones at once (thus creating harmony) is by halving the note lengths (to say 32nds) and varying between the two notes of a harmony. Download an example here.

Monotones didn't really come in ringtone formats, except for RTTTL (Ring Tone Text Transfer Language, sometimes also referred to as keypress ringtones), which Nokia devised in their earlier cellphones, and some other proprietory files for other cell phone manufacturers.

These days monophonic ringtones (or monotones) aren't used that much anymore, but still readily available online in various keypress formats.
